Suggestion for adjusting start and end frames

Post by Armaani »

I like the new ability to specify the start and end frames in the project preferences. Might I suggest adding the ability to adjust these on the timeline by dragging the edges of the grey bar that shows what this "render range" is (where the frame numbers are). Don't know how easy this would be to implement, but it would be nice.

Do you all have a preferred method? It can't be a plain old mouse click & drag, since you click and drag in that area to move the current time. A modifier key could work...any other preferences?

i think having like a little tab/anchor/arrow at the beginning and end that you have to click on specifically to mvoe them...

its that too hard??

Do whatever's easiest and works :)

That would be hard because that's the same area you click on to set the current frame. What if you wanted to set the current frame to the end of the animation - you'd be clicking right on the "arrow thingy".

hrmmm... It could be just above the timeline, like another timeline bar but skinnier and shows the 'render range' which can be changed by dragging the ends?

otherwise i dont know how it would be implemented[/img]

I'm happy with a modifier key - Ctrl+click or Ctrl+drag perhaps ? Ctrl is relatively easy to find on the keyboard without looking.

Hmm - while you could possibly Ctrl+drag the ends, a Ctrl+click can't set both ends - Ctrl+click for setting the end, Alt+click for setting the start ?

A toggle button to change modes ? Set current frame / set end frame / set start frame ? Change the colour of the 'render range highlight' to indicate the mode ?

Regards, Myles - and change some of the UI colours to indicate the time - ahh, it's orange o'clock, time for a cuppa.

I prefer Spasmodic's idea: Use a special handle at the top of the timeline that you can click and drag. It's more consistent and intuitive than relying on seperate hotkeys.

I like the idea of being able to press ctrl+click before dragging.

You could maybe tie this functionality into the select preview range?
When you ctrl click on the frame number bar to select the start and end points of the preview maybe that frame range would be counted for the export range. Or you could have a check box on the output panel to export frame range or whole project?

I like the special handle idea myself.

However if this is not possible there could be start and end frame settings inside the settings box.

Those are my 2 cents.

I also like the special handle idea, but I totally understand LM's concerns about the complications such a solution creates.

Personally, I wouldn't mind having to use a hotkey (like CTRL+drag), because I'm used to using hotkeys a LOT in Moho. I use them for all major operations, so having one more wouldn't be a real bother for me.

I was thinking about this and what do you guys thing about a CTR+Left click and CTR+Right click?

The CTR+Left click would set the starting frame,
The CTR+Right click would set the end frame.

sounds like a good idea to me.
