It's really smoothed out. This might sound strange, but I think frame-by-frame looks better at a lower frame rate. If it isn't low enough, you lose the 'hand of the creator' effect that shows that it really is frame-by-frame.

I've had some luck just adding a dummy keyframe to the right of the existing frame, using it to shorten the frame, then deleting the dummy keyframe.
