Would there be a case where one would absolutely have to use a switch layer
instead of this feature?

I'm sure it helps some people organize files but I never use it. I've got a different system for sorting my files, grouping them by each project with their sound f/x, music, etc. The library did seem a little quirky at times here too. To delete stuff permanently you can always go to the source file...
