Animation over real footage

Post by Víctor Paredes »

Hi. In a few days we will have a referendum in Chile to approve a new constitution or keep the current one (the current one written in 1980 during a dictatorship and was approved via a fraudulent referendum).
I volunteered as writer, animator and partially director of this piece. This animation is part of a bigger campaign that is being shown on every tv channel (in Chile there's a legal daily tv time for each option before the election day).
The art was created by Leo Beltrán.
The script and design is based on the animals of the Chilean national emblem.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it :)

In terms of positive feedback:

I will have to say I really like the Making Of. The finished product is good, and I know it was done in a short time period, but there are a few niggles:

- 0:25 - "Eagle" - The design of the claws (or not)
- 0:35 - "Deer" - Knee popping glitches (front legs)
- 0:35 - "Deer" - Movement over cobbled stones, but walks as if on flat surface
- 0:40 - "Eagle" - Accelerates without flapping wings etc.
- 0:42 - Not sure about the whole scene. The color combination(background vs characters) feels a bit off
- 0:42 - "Deer" - Front leg/feet movements slide (not same as prior walk cycle)
- 0:49 - "Shirt/Blouse/Pinny" jitter / artifacts. This may be due to the recording / TV differences
- 0:56 - "Lady" - Walk & Animation feels a little crude (maybe intentional?)

I am sure a tremendous amount of work went into making this, but I feel the final product is not quite as polished as previous work. Maybe I have set my expectations too high? :D

I had a parragraph explaining why it looks rough in the first post, but it looks like I removed it by mistake.
The production times for this kind of videos are crazy and most of the time that means simply doing the best you can with the time and resources you have.
At the end, to animate the entire video I only had one weekend. That meant starting at 6am and finishing after midnight both days.
I had to let go many things, improvise in others, coordinate with the people editing the real footage, prepare the files for a simple final comp, etc.
The final video could be way better (in the 'industry', I'm used to work for days or weeks before a few seconds are approved), but even then I'm very proud about what we achieved with this short and the amazing reception both the final video and the script are having.

It is certainly very impressive that you accomplished so much in such a small timescale.

Ultimately my earlier comments could be seen as overly judgemental references to minor niggles - which probably most people in the intended audience would neither notice, nor care about. Indeed, I never noticed many of the items until I started pixel-peeping and looking for them.

I will continue to eagerly look forward to your future masterpieces.

Amazing what you managed to accomplish in such a tight deadline. There is always so much to learn from your videos. Great to see how 2d animation, is combined with real 3d video footage.

Especially nice to see art being used to help people. Lets hope this time the US will leave your country alone, no more CIA coups, no more Pinochet's.

Thank you for sharing.

Excellent work.

Moho was built for speed. That's why I like it. I can have ideas and animate at the same time, which boggles my mind.
If animation software was a car, Moho would be a race car. Vrooom.

Congratulations Chile, on rejecting a government takeover of your country, by a coalition including the Communist Party, which would have surrendered freedom, rights, and representation in exchange for government dependency. The majority of Chileans (61%) have had their voices heard, in a free democracy.

You do realize this was a referendum where presidential elections were in March and the progressive Left won?
This referendum was about Chicago boys and Pinochet's policies - should they change or keep them

I wish luck to the Chilean people. They would certainly need some.

p.s.
Psssssst / have you checked the dialogues in Victor's video? Captions. auto-translate... and stuff
Perhaps reading the initial post could help?

Were there any Santiago boys involved in US elections or the constitution?

On the other hand, imagine... you being involved in a national campaign, come here to post about it and then, a few days later, I come to greet the victory of the opposing party as a reply in the thread.

Mildly put - manners?
Pssssst....
