I need a tutor for Moho

Post by georgefranks »

I am working on my own animation project that has been going for a while and I really want to make a promo for what could be a feature or streamed series. I would love for a great teacher to give me weekly/fortnightly/monthly online face to face tutorials to get me going with Moho. I have most of the basics of rigging and stuff but my story and characters deserve better than what I have been able to achieve. Can anyone help?

Some resources for writing:

This is a class from Second City that is all about writing for animation. Sounds like it covers a lot of what you'd need to know. The class is 3 hours a week for 7 weeks. I've taken classes from Second City online, and they were great.

Here is a two video series about writing for animation. The instructor, Andrew Nicholls, was the head writer for Johnny Carson. He is STILL writing (Netflix), and has written over 400 episodes of various cartoons that you've watched/heard of.

There are also a lot of books available that discuss the creation of animated series'. For instance here is a book that goes deep into the production of the X-Men cartoon:

In any event, those will get you educated on story creation for episodic animation better than we can.

Not sure what you mean when you say your characters deserve better, but if you mean their design, Stephen Silver is a phenomenal character designer who has a YouTube, a book, and a course through Schoolism. Here is the book:

That said, I'd just go ahead and make things with the skills you have now. It's too easy to dump years upon years into skill acquisition, all the while not having much of an output. TRUST ME. Also, if your animation actually got picked up, they'd have artists working on it for you. Have you seen the animations that were the basis or Rick and Morty? They are much MUCH rougher. Your time would be better spent cranking out shorts to learn how to tell a story with animation.

For a little inspiration, check out the shorts that Alanthebox has made:

They are hilarious, tell a story, and were done by a single person. Armed with some shorts like this, a vision for a series, a pitch bible with art/designs etc. you could then pitch it to XYZ and see what happens.

Good luck to you!

Thanks man they will be really helpful. Yes I have been down that path and have some pretty well developed characters and scripts. I know that if it ever gets taken up others will be doing the hard yards. The problem is (as you know) getting it to that stage. I agree I should work with what Ive got and try and get it out there....but I think I need a bit better skill set at MOHO to put together a 2 minute promo for it. I have written a script and have all the audio ready just need to rig my characters properly, do a simple background set and learn a bit more about putting it together in MOHO. http://thesymph.com/

Ahhh gotcha! Ya know, McCoy Buck is a really good teacher, I wonder if he would be open to some tutoring... Might be worth reaching out! He's got a YouTube channel...a facebook group (Can't remember the name off the top of my head), and he's on this forum (mtbuck24). Wouldn't hurt to send him a message to ask anyway.
