Large Anime Studio 8 File running slowly

I have a 73MB saves anime file. It is large because it has essentially 12 characters created by the character wizard. The response is very slow - long delays between a command and seeing results. For example,
Go to move a layer, and it doesn't appear to move, wait 20 seconds and then it moves. I assume that program is searching through the countless layers before getting to the right one to operate on. I has 8GB of RAM in my machine, and I upgraded to 12GB and that helped a bit. I have ordered more memory to get to 16GB, which may help some more. Anime Studio Tech support suggested lowering the display quality, which seems to also help a bit, but not solve the problem.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?
