Help from a sound expert -asx to mp3

Post by bupaje »

Hi. I'm hoping there might be some sound expert on the forum who can give me a hand. Trying to download and burn a talk from this page for my bosses wife.

http://www.lds.org/conference/sessions/ ... 15,00.html

"Encircled in The Arms of Love"

at the top of the page (by Neal A. Maxwell).

I won't bore you by describing all the things I've tried but can anyone either give me a simple 1-2-3 way to convert this to mp3 or if they have 5 minutes -and if it won't take longer than this - and can convert it for me and post it I would be greatful.

I only have about 45 minutes left so if this will take more than a couple minutes of your time then don't worry. The bosses wife can do without as it was a last minute request from her and I did manage to make the rest of the compilation from files she had on her own cd's. Just this one is a hassle as it looks like the asx format just points to a particular track on the file elsewhere online; I tried getting that asf file and converting and downloaded all sorts of codecs and utilities but it got the better of me.

The other files are saved as cda format which was how Nero saved 'em. Seems to playback fine. She just wants to be able to play the talk back on a CD player so I guess (hope) that cda or mp3 ....

Didn't want anyone wasting time on this so figured I'd mention time is past and I told her I couldn't do it.

It maybe too late to reply but... There are programmes like (if you haven't tried it already, there are not so many programmes that do this type conversion (Advanced Stream Redirector (ASX) :

if you'll need some time in the future, even trial programme might do it.

You can try and play the file over the net and use a audio recorder device like cool edit and record at the same time. You loose some quality but since the file is only in 16k to start with thats not a big issue here.

Because its a steaming file, its best if you get a recording program, something simple, and use a "record what you hear" function. It might also be called "monitor mix" which all means whatever is currently making a sound within your computer environment will be recorded.

I'm guessing you can just search http://www.download.com and hopefully find a free one (i haven't used such a small, like recording thing in ages, so i can't really suggest anything).

Hope this helps, alittle.

@godlike27 - thanks. I did try that demo but had problems. From looking at th asx file in notepad it seems that it points to a particular track on a much larger asf file (this was one talk of a series of talks). While the asx file I wanted played correctly on my pc when I tried to use this conversion program it was only grabbing the first minute or so of the entire series of talks -never got close to the track referenced by the asx file. :/

@rylleman and cribble - thanks. I considered that but thought I needed I microphone; sounds like I don't if I read you right. Even though time is past I am going to go give it a try just so I know for the future.
