Playing with my Wacom

Post by bupaje »

I purchased a Wacom a little while ago but haven't been comfortable with it so I've been drawing with my mouse. Had a couple of hours this morning, put on the headphones and started trying some stuff. Finding it really hard to get fine control with it, guess I also will have to read the manual to figure out the short cut keys and stuff but here is my effort such as it is.

Here's a section of the full image to show the detail a bit.

I drew the elements as individual images -sky, mountains, walking thing, the 'wood' structures- and then just put them all together. If anyone knows any good threads or forums that mention tips/tricks for working with a pen I'd love to hear it.

Sorry but ive never used a tablet. but id imagine it will just take a bit of practice to get the best from it. once your exp with it youl come good. like most things in life :D

btw- to my eyes it looks pretty good. nice textures on the diffrnt elements. the trees look smart. did you use a brush for that?

I use the Wacom for everything now (helps with preventing RSI a little). It just takes a bit of practice to get used to it.

Try loading in a drawing and then tracing it. Or just try doing basic drawing exercises: straight lines, circles, smooth curves, etc. Once you get the hang of it you'll probably find the mouse quite limiting by comparison.

Good luck!

Ps. Very nice drawings, especially with a mouse! I never did get the hang of drawing with a mouse.

@Regul8r - yes, it was a stock PSP brush called Marble.

@kiddy13 - thanks for the suggestions. I think I will try tracing a few images -didn't occur to me.

www.cgtalk.com has some good wacom artists.

They have a daily sketch thread:

Some people are really great, some are just starting out. Generally speaking it's a supportive community of artists.

Taping a sheet of paper over the Wacom, then "drawing" on the paper, helped me when I was first getting used to the feel of a Wacom.
It feels more like drawing on paper (more texture feedback).

Then, once I was used to the Wacom pen control on the screen, I could take the paper away and get used to the feel of the Wacom surface. I found it easier than jumping straight in to normal Wacom use.

Regards, Myles.

Thanks for the tips, will try the paper on Wacom tonight. :) As for CGTAlk I tried that thread for a week or so -was a lot of fun. Used pencils but maybe will give it a go with the pen again soon.

Wow, I'm impressed. I really like the visual style you've come up with.

Are they layers that were created in photoshop and imported as images? Or did you convert the brushes to PNG and use them within moho?

Actually I created thee layers in PSP and tried them in Moho; this shot is from within PSP.

The truth is this past week I finally rented two animations I had heard of but never seen. "Castle in the Sky" and "Spirited Away" by Ghibli Films http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/films/

Basically I fell in love with them. :) That's sort of what spurred me to test the Wacom when I had my first few hours free. I want to buy both when I can and definetly the new "Howl's Moving Castle" when it comes out.

I also picked up a book called "Animation Background Layouts" http://www3.sympatico.ca/mike.fowler/page.html and have started reading it to see what I can pick up.

I know this is off topic but that's the way threads go.

Bupaje, Spirited Away and Castle in the Sky are fantastic. I recently rented Porco Rosso and found I liked it even better! It's like watching an anime version of classic films from the '40's (like Cassablanca). It's beautifully animated and has a story that's a lot of fun.

Check it out as soon as you can.

I haven't seen Castle in the Sky, but I *loved* Spirited Away. I don't really like the Japanese Anime style too much, so I wasn't going in with high expectations. However, it's just beautiful! And to watch the progression of the girl's character is facinating.

I understand that "Howl's Moving Castle" is in limited release right now here in the US, and will be opening wider soon. I can't wait!
