I'm masking a character with a invisible rectangle shape, revealing the character by moving his layer into the borders of the rectangle/mask. But instead of gradually revealing parts of the character as his layer moves into the mask boundary, the character gets to a certain point and then just pops in.
The layer order from top to bottom
'Bobbys Actions'(Group Layer) = Hide All; Don't Mask this Layer
'Mask' (Vector Layer inside Group Layer)= +add to mask, but keep invisible
'Bobbys Bones' (Bone Layer inside Group Layer)= reveal all; Mask this Layer
Any ideas on how to get a gradual reveal?

Make sure you haven't accidentally set the visibility of your mask or other layers.
Were you experimenting with other ways to do this? It could be you have some visibility keys in there that are causing the "pop".
Your description of the layers set up is correct. The only cause of the "pop" I can think of would be either keys of the motion of the character layer or the visibility of the mask.
If a mask is "invisible" so are the layers it "reveals". You have hide all set for the group. If the mask is invisible and suddenly "appears" so will any layers that are masked.
