Hi.
Thanks to some inspiration from rplate I've started some new tests with the scale rotate head turn technique this time focusing on a simple cartoon character. This is an initial test with one eye and no mouth the focus being on developing a technique that can achieve a perfect front to profile rotation for a cartoon head shape.

EDIT: Whoops! Thanks Vern fixed Embarassed

That's fantastic! I love it.

(you have an extra "s" in the link... it should be "rotatetest.swf " instead of "rotatetests.swf ")

Ahhh..what te heck.I can't refuse you Genete Smile ...and uploading the anme file is far easier than uploading screen shots.

This is a test file so only one half of the head is done. It's all controlled by bones that are rigged up as self masking shapes. One layer uses visibility switching.

EDIT: At this point it would be quite easy to use an extra switch layer to achieve a complete 360 degrees rotation.

Very rough atm...as the eye just vanishes out of shot, but I am only concentrating on the head shape, here's a 180 degree turn.

EDIT: OMG!!!!I achieved a 180 deg turn with no switch layer at all!!!

Excelent trick the constraints combinations and the proper moment of the layer hide.

I have a suggestion: instead of make responsible for all the rotations of the head to a side face scale bone (number 1 in the file) I suggest to create a root file where all the non constrained scaled bones depends on. It would avoid some translation of the other scaled bones that depends on the left top one.

here the file:

Congratulations! Keep it up!

Here is the other trick that avoids a switch layer for the 180 degree head shape rotation. If you would like to rebone it for me Genete it would be great!

Hi Genete.
Thanks for doing that!!! I just fixed up a couple of line errors in your file with the new bone structure. It must have been an older version you downloaded.

Here it is.

Great achievements ...

And I just like the idea of a guy with just one eye. Give him ears and a mouth, but instead of the second eye just a slightly visible scar ... He could be a character who pretends to be funny but is bitter and cynical. He would fit into stories where his one-eyedness (in the sense of narrowmindedness and prejudice) causes all kinds of trouble ...

Hey, this guy has potential!

Ok I wanted to keep this technique as simple as possible so anyone could do it so I started from scratch. I have kept all shapes simple and the setup has only two control bones to control one half of the head at a time. It is very very easy to use once te head has been set up. It uses a simple switch layer to swap from left side turn to right side turn and the transition is seamless.

When I implement the mouth I will make the anme file available and if it works ok possibly a tutorial.

Cheers

That is so cool. It just... works. The best part is that you can't "see" any "tricks". It just looks like a perfect head turn.

<sigh>

I need to learn to simplify my life. Wink
