Preferred Linux Flavor?

Post by Blue »

My laptop died. If I can get it running again, I'm considering loading Linux on it. A friend suggested Ubuntu, any other Linux flavors that come recommended?

I like Ubuntu myself. But if your laptop is an old (slower) Xubuntu would be better for it. ;)

I'm downloading Ubuntu Studio 9.04 right now, its packaged with Blender, Gimp...

I've read positive things about OpenSuse, and Debian.

Mostly I just want it to install and work. I've read of many linux install failures, or wi-fi not working, sound not working...ugh.

I'll (hopefully) be installing it on a hp zv5240us laptop. Hopefully that is old enough that there is no hardware too fancy for a Linux distro to recognize.

I went with Linux Mint, which is largely based on Ubuntu. Works well except wifi issues on my laptop.

I'm using Puppy Linux on mine, it's the only one I can get working on it.

If all fails for you, I highly recommend it.
