Lite versions are generally derived from the full version, not the other way around.

It all depends on how you write software. It is quite possible and I've done it myself, finish the lite version before the pro version. And on a large source code program, they're usually seperate. It would be a pain to finish the pro version then edit everything out for the lite.

Sorry, but I cringe at the thought of Mike maintaining the Lite and Pro versions as two separate sources. I imagine that there would be one common source package and the two versions get automatically generated from that at the press of a button.

Anime Studio 6!
Why am I the last to know.

This is going to be the BEST summer ever!
One question though, can you open anime studio 5 files on v6?
I love comments for they help me improve on my weaknesses.

So I went back to that Walmart...

I was WRONG! The clerk most definitely WAS NOT hitting on me. How embarrassing. I always read those signals wrong. Luckily I got out quick. No manager was called in to escort me out like that last time... uh... I mean it didn't escalate.

;)

It would be DAMN strange if legacy files could not be opened by the latest version of a piece of software...but maybe Smith Micro are trailblazers in this, as in so many other spheres?
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

LOL, programming doesn't work like that. There's no "one button" solution for anything. Well, except for elevators.

Vern man! breaking down the bad vibe! Great comedy timing too.

People! just relax, jeez at least your still getting upgrades.

And can I just add, we knew about the release, was even asked if we wanted to put artwork on the box, and given a deadline for it which generally means a release schedule.

@mkelly - i don't think that kind of aggression is called for - if you have indeed worked in the business then you should know how hard it is for developers and programmers when they are involved with a larger cooperation. Mike obviously is thinking about the future of the software and himself and family and doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize the bigger picture. Go easy man, if he signed things over and is on the payroll then things are different and he playing ball their way.

I think you guys sometimes get a little over excited, passion does that I know, it's good to vent, it's great to debate but insults don't help anything.

Other than that, can't wait to use Pro 6, but from what I heard it wasn't ready when Debut went to release. So we may have to wait a while longer.

I won't speak to character anymore -- haven't changed my opinion but it's not important. It's business, not personal.

As to the Pro version -- hey, I actually know more than most of you. It will be released June 1st and I'm told I will have it an hour after that. So you CAN preorder it if you want (direct from SM). I'm not at all unhappy with that (now if I had been told to just keep visiting Wal-Mart on the off chance that some day it might show up...)

(And how weird is it that apparently Vern and Greykid were not on the beta for this? I'm reading between the lines but even an NDA doesn't mean you write the way the two of them have -- which is to say statements which would mislead you otherwise. I think there is something very wrong with that but what would I know? I'm just a programmer who made enough money to retire before I was 55 and spend the time playing in Florida by the poolside :>)

Really will that date mean available for download too? Or do you know that much? Thanks.

I was told by the SM sales rep that I could download the product at that time (I wasn't buying a boxed version).

Actually, I'll say something very positive about SM -- Emily was the gal's name and she was both friendly AND helpful. When I first spoke with her she *thought* the product was available but said she had to check. She called me back an hour later with the full information because she wanted to make sure I didn't get upset when I didn't see the download info in my email. All in all she was extraordinarily competent, the first trace of anything I've seen like it at SM (I'm not even going to go into my experience with them and email today).

We were asked and we very much would like to be apart of it but we were in the middle of a big project so couldn't feasibly do it at the time.

That said we'll hopefully be working with Mike and the guys in the near future.

Hey guys,

Here I am, ready to answer some questions. First off, seeing the product on WalMart shelves was a bit of a surprise to us as well. It's not that we were trying to keep some secret from the members of the forum - WalMart just put the product out faster than we had anticipated.

Yes, what you see at WalMart is actually Anime Studio 6.0. It's the real thing, but WalMart was an exclusive that we thought would hit the shelves next week. Sounds like it was a week early but some of the big retailers such as WM, Target, and even Amazon like to get these early exclusives and this is not unusual for retail software distribution. Smith Micro usually works with Amazon on these but this time we decided to go with WalMart.

There is still a Pro version coming. The "non-Pro" version is now called Anime Studio Debut, and that's what WalMart is selling, not the Pro version.

What you see at WalMart is a slightly different offering than what will be released very soon and we’d recommend that if you haven’t purchased it yet to get it direct from us. It’s worth the very short wait. However, if you do buy the product from WalMart (if you just can't wait), you'll be able to download an update to Anime Studio Debut from us.

Next, about beta testing:
Beta testing has been going on for some time. For communication clarity, we didn't do a public beta, but quite a few members on this forum have been involved. We’d planned on posting to the forums this Friday with some information on the new version but if some of the beta testers would like to shed some light on the new features, we would welcome that.

Heyvern has been one of the beta testers, and I've been personally working with him to fix key bugs and even add some personal feature requests he's had. Please don't give him any grief for keeping this secret. We've asked him and the other beta testers not to talk about it, and I really appreciate their discretion, especially now that the WalMart product has surfaced. Heyvern, you're free to talk - if you want to tell folks about some of the new stuff, go for it!

I've been working my butt off on version 6. Sorry I haven't been able to talk about it, but it's so close now and it's really good. If you've got more questions about this release, WalMart, or anything else, fire away.
