Flash or AS Pro

Post by ngh903 »

I have AS 5 and am going to upgrade to Pro. But I need to ask. Is Flash or AS Pro better?

For character animation AS is the hands down winner, but it doesn't do any of the web interaction stuff Flash does. So depends on what you need it to do.

For Animation, Anime Studio Pro and for Web or games, Flash

Flash has its purpose in animation as well. I found Flash to be quite valuable when I exported my character animation from ASPro, imported it into Flash, and used Flash to composite and time my scenes.

The point is: it's not a pass/fail or black/white situation. It all depends on the strengths and weaknesses of either software. Flash has its limitations and ASPro has its limitations. Likewise both softwares have their advantages also.

Unless you plan on doing anything interactive, like games, save yourself a huge headache and just stick to ASP. Flash has its uses, but when it comes to character animation it is night and day.

p.s. If you have the $700 for Flash, then the $100 to upgrade to ASP shouldn't break the bank (even buying both). But there are plenty of people here that have/had Flash and never use it.

Here's how I think of Flash and ASP... not as "competing" products but as COMPLIMENTARY products.

If you use any type of motion graphics software, like AE, 3D software even Flash, you still need or want an image editor like Photoshop, Gimp, paint.net etc to go with it. Photoshop wouldn't compete with AE, it enhances it.

I see ASP with Flash combo like a "Photoshop with AE" combo. They work well together. ASP can create wonderful character animation exported to SWF. Flash can use those assets more effectively than ASP by itself. Flash can't do character animation by itself as well as ASP.

ASP and Flash are good partner programs. ASP can export SWF but it's limited when you don't have the Flash application. Flash by itself is a good program for creating streamlined fast download interactive animations but it doesn't have a lot of tools dedicated to character animation.

It is funny though you will find a lot of people don't even hear words that are not endorsed by the masses.
Anime studio , gimp or celtx just don't register to them as even being real compared to their expensive counterparts Flash PS or directors cut.
I can understand why they might need these programs but "application blindness" or "appgap" is a strange phenomenon.
Welcome back madrobot, how was Thailand?
Internet finally connected here,Yay!

I think you're right on the money with that comment Chuck.

It's funny how people go with the masses. About a year ago I was talking
to a teacher at the local primary school who is right into animation and
had until recently run an "animation club" at the school for the kids.
Awesome. But, you guessed it, flash. That's fine, but when I started
talking about AS Pro and how amazing and cheap it is, his eyes glazed over.

Now Chuck will be the first to confirm that I'm boring to talk to, but that
wasn't the (only) issue - when I changed the topic from Flash,
apparently "the be all and end all of 2d animation" in the minds of so
many, the guy lost interest. Probably dismissed it as amatuer and not the
real deal. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. (I need to go see that
guy and show him what I did!)

For me, I can't imagine trying to do character animation in Flash alone. I
stumbled across an online tute for doing just that, on the Adobe site, and
I couldn't believe how much work you'd have to do just to get some basic
character stuff happening. (I have done some work in flash. It was a bit
tedious to use.)

Sure, if I had to I could do it in Flash alone, but it seems to me that the
workflow would really get in your way.

On another note, is it just me, or am I seeing a lot of trademark
flash "shear" translations in character animation?

(Thailand was awesome mate, thanks
- and on that note..)

... A HUGE thanks to all on this forum for the help and support I have received here.

I scored a 9 month fulltime animation gig here at work, working in ASPro
(then out to Premiere, some AE and PS work, sound in Soundbooth and
Soundtrack Pro.) The help on here and friendly attitude has been of
immeasurable assistance to me in achieving a tight deadline (3x4 mins
shorts in 9 months, from scratch, writing directing animating solo mostly
but with help from colleagues with theme song and directing the voice
actors.) Particularly need to thank Chucky Cheese and Synthsin, and to
acknowledge the considerable help recieved by myself and other AS
users on this forum from Vern and Genete - not to take anything away of
course from anyone else I may have missed.

This is a really constructive forum, and I think that's worth acknowledging.

I just completed the project a week ago and was flown by work to
present the shorts at a conference in Thailand, where it was well-recieved.

Thanks guys!
Adrian

I pernonally like ASP much better than Flash, I think it's easier to learn and you work a lot faster in it.

Since I haven't used Flash that much, I can't really say which software is most powerful etc, but as the others already said here, ASP is better at character animation, and Flash for web and games.
