I don't even want to look at the script, from those reactions.

AGHRGHRG!!!

I SAID THAT IT WAS FRIGGIN MESSY!!!

The forum is only to get the idea down. This is only a very very rough draft. Formatting is done outside the forum.

Anyway, you said that you have lost intrest, and Im not suprised, this has taken a lot just to get the script out. I dont care if some big names from this forum drop out, as long as i get at least 1 person out of this, then I consider it a sucess. It was a plea for animators with some free time, this project is very loose at the moment, and some of your criticisms are harsh.

If you dont want to help, dont, but dont go stopping people who have a little bit of intrest.

I am fully anticipating a very abusive reply from this post.

You'll probably be a little disappointed ... we might be critical but we don't get into flame wars.

I haven't said this but you might want to torrent search "Final Draft 6" + crack. This is a pro script writing package which you will find actually helps you write fast. It keeps everything in format automatically, looks after the scene numbering etc. Even allows you to drag scenes around and drop them in other places.

When you are finished, it can output just th dialogue for one character, complete scene location reports and a host of other damn useful documents.

Believe me, I have worked with several novice writers who have turn their nose up and say, "I've always written on the back of a fag packet, used Word or whatever."

After one week of using Final Draft, they understand why it was suggested and struggle to write anything without it. FD6 is used extensively on many Hollywood features.

Also there is Celtx - an online project management system which includes a script package. This might actually be very good for your project, as its designed for exactly what you are doing. Available for windows, Mac and Linux, in 20 different languages.

Highly recommended.

dueyftw wrote:Normal formatting equates to one minute a page. your draft is like 3 to 4 minutes a page.
Correction:

Live action runs to 1 minute per page, animation runs 30 seconds a page: This is because every shot is listed; live action doesn't describe the shot only the scene. To make it really confusing, animation calls each shot a scene.

Modern animation such as Reg and Stimpy run faster, about 25 seconds per page - fast action, shorter scenes. Wind in the Willows runs 30 secs.

Hope this helps someone.

so I am told

The official site is www.finaldraft.com

Cost of the official version of Final Draft 7 is $229.

Rough Draft is okay but contains no smart type and the auto-pagination is more basic.

Celtx is a better bet.

"Cracked" software was where this discussion went of course in the first place. We (I) gave the original poster a pretty hard time about that.

Let's not head down that road again please!

I use a "free" Word template that formats for TV. I used it to write all my Happy Bear scripts. Works great and is simple to use. There are enough free tools out there for this type of thing there is no need to encourage "stealing".

I live in a part of the world where is is often not possible to buy original software - even buying programs online (including eFrontier) failed as the automate system detected Thailand or Cambodia and simply refused to proceed. Refusal is on the grounds there is too much piracy here. Well one of the reasons there is too much piracy here is because we cannot buy legal copies online.

Smith Micro please take note. I might need three more licenses soon.

Being honest, I think Joe is not ready for FD6 or 7. He would do better with the free Celtx as that permits mutli-user access to the project online, as well as reference images and other hyper linked materials. Projects can be made pubic or private.

One argument FOR cracked software, especially with applications like 3Dmax, is once a user gets goos at the program and has invested large amounts of man hours learning the program, they tend to stay with that software for life. There was a suggest one large 3D company released their own keygen for that very reason. The idea being is large or commercial studios do have paid up licenses, manuals and maintenance agreements. If the studios have a pool of people already trained on cracked software, the software companies eventually win in the long term. Those downloaders-dabblers are not potential customer for high end programs - they usually realise its hard and quickly bore of it. Those who stick with it and get good, get employed eventually and puy licences later. The trade even have a name for it - from memory I think its called delayed purchase.

The argument software download deprive the software company of good income is quite frankly bogus. Downloading music is different since there is no skill or time investment to use the download. That is fraud and depriving the companies of money.

I'm sorry but this is turning into a philosophical discussion based on personal "opinions" not the LAW. Your arguments about the use of "cracked" software is as old as the hills. The people who sell their programs don't agree with and neither do the courts.

Regardless of whether it is "fair" or not, using cracked software is ILLEGAL. It isn't up to a customer to decide if using a cracked application is "okay" because they are just learning it and will "buy it later when they make money with it". Someone using a cracked program is NOT likely to buy it. Besides that is what demos are for.

I am sorry you can't purchase the software you need. I don't know what can be done about that. It is stupid if you ask me. It still doesn't make it right to use cracked software. You can do what you have to but you don't have to encourage others to.

I knew a guy years ago who ran his entire design firm with ALL bootleg software. He didn't own or purchase ANY software. Meanwhile I was spending thousands for the same applications. He drove a $60,000 SUV. The monthly payment was more than all the software he stole.

When I found out what he was doing I told him to BUY THE DANG SOFTWARE or I was going to turn him in. Better I made that "threat" then he gets nabbed by someone else later who isn't a friend.

I worked for another agency that had "illegal" copies of many programs. When I was hired to do multimedia and manage the production department the first thing I did was INSIST THEY BUY LEGAL COPIES FOR EVERY EMPLOYEE. They grumbled about the price and I said it would be cheaper than paying the fines if they got turned in.

I DO NOT SUPPORT BOOTLEG SOFTWARE. Find some way to get the legal software. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Wow, this conversation quickly turned into something else...

Yeah, Ive got rid of the links from my site, and I dont really intend to use bootleg software, (well not with this guy around anyway), And I am using word to format my scripts. I may look at final draft, if there is a demo of something, but otherwise word is fine.

The reson you probably thought episode 1 was so long was because one of the longer scenes was written about 4 times.

Yes, sorry about that.

No hard feelings I hope? I think it was for the best. You don't need that kind of aggravation on top of all the other work needed to do your project. Better it happened this way then through "official channels". If it wasn't me it would have been someone else eventually.

Yeah, it was bound to happen eventually, if no you, someone less friendly. It did seem like you were some evil spoilsport who's only joy in life was to ruin other peoples, but now i see that is only partially true.

You've been very good as a legal adviser.

If someone gives you an pen 'it's free'. When you take one off someones desk and put it back 'it's borrowing'. When you have no intention of returning it, 'it's stealing'.

Working with stolen software is just as bad as stealing someone animation or written word, the stuff comes back to you. enough said.

jotoonkid, You might think that I'm out to destroy you hopes and dreams, but all I'm doing is trying to get you feet back on the ground.

As I said, I did bother to read what you wrote. You can write, now edit. That means that you have to put aside what isn't necessary. Animation is not like most forms of visual art. You just don't ad lib or take shot after shot and pick the best one. No one, Studio or Individual can afford to have 30 seconds of complete animation not used because it simply doesn't work for the story. A short tight script is what I'm looking for.

The very first part where the scene ends into the white flash isn't bad, it's good.
Now add to it, WHAT HAPPEN NEXT? Are they transformed or is it the place and time?

Let me clarify something. Learning with cracked software is one thing, working commercially is a totally different issue. The Thai company, Creative Kingdom had a policy of licensed software - even if it meant buying software in one country and importing it to another. The policy paid off. The government inspectorate paid a visit and checked: Had they found any illegal stuff, the fine would have been enormous; another animation company closed after such a raid found non-licensed stuff. Similar commercial checks are made in other countries too.

But trying to buy our official versions of programs highlighted an issue the big software guys created. By denying legal sales, they promote software piracy. It is therefore unfair to then turn around and complain about the cracked or cloned licenses - its the kill you parents and complain your an orphan routine.

For the record, the stuff I use for work is either licensed or open source. Indeed, I am now using more open source than commercial products - Blender and Open Office are the two main ones. I have two XP licenses which I use, both bought in Europe - I cannot by an off the self one here: Only OEM installed program (and many of those are hacked by the shops). When I tried to relicense one PC when the HD died, Microsoft Thailand at first refused to issue a licence key for it - because I had originally licensed it in Europe.

The nice thing about the law is it is a guide. Those legal guide changes from time to time, to take into account grey areas. Some downloading clearly comes under comes under fair use and the courts have agreed: Using cracks for commerce can never be called fair use.

Hell, we are way off topic on this. I'm done with it - back to harassing this guy.

He needs to write his scripts properly - a good script (or a good storyboard) will inspire everyone to make the film to the best of their ability; a confusing one won't.
