[masking] man in bat

Post by FrozenDelight »

Hello. I was wondering if someone could help, I am new to Anime Studio. This question has been answered before, but I still don't get it. I'm sorry if I'm going over a subject that has been done before.

I am hoping to add a link to this message of an example file, but I don't know how to. Can anyone tell me a good file upload site? I just tried two and they didn't work.

So, I want to place a man sitting in a boat. The view is from the side, you can see the upper part of the mans body, but the side of the boat close the camera view blocks the bottom half of the man's body. When it is animated, the man will have a bone structure, and the boat probably will as well. Because it's a dingy, all rubber like and flexable.

I understand that I could make the boat with 2 seperate layers and place the man in the middle, but then, when I animate the boat, they won't move together. Or will they? I don't know, I tried and got very confused.

I've tried 5 sites now and none of them are letting me upload a simple little file. It must be this mac, I'll try it on a pc and post it later. Hopefully.

Thank you.

OOOPS! Oh dear, how terribly embarrassing! I typed man in bat by mistake! Well, as you've probably already figured out, it's supposed to be man in BOAT. I guess man in bat would be more interesting.

So anyway, here is an example file. It's just to help describe what I'm trying to understand by the way. It's not actually going to be used, I can draw a little better than that :?

I'd like to give you a hand, but I can't figure out this site. What are you supposed to click to get your .anme file?

Without seeing anything, my guess is you might consider Layer Binding.

It's quite simple. Think of layers as folders. Everything you place in a folder will move with the folder. So a vector layer or an image layer is placed in a bone layer and will, without further adjustments, move with the bone layer. If you attach stuff to separate bones, it will move with these bones.

Now the trick is that you can place folders into folders into folders (nested folders it's called), and the same is possible with layers.

Some setup could be like this (V = Vector layer, B = Bone layer):

Water (V) in front
Boat&Man (B)
- Man arm front (B)
- - Arm front with paddle (V)
- Boat front (B)
- - Boat part (V)
- - Boat part (V)
- - Boat part (V)
- Man (B)
- - Body
- - Arm back (V)
- - Head (V)
- Boat back (B)
- - Boat part (V)
- - Boat part (V)
- - Boat part (V)
Water (V) in back

Bone, Group and Switch layers are the folders within AS, Vector and Image layers are the items. The nice thing is that you can put a bone layer inside a bone layer and attach it to a certain bone. The only drawback is that you have to select the different bone layers separately befor you can manipulate their bones.

Hi Gnaws. To get the file, you scroll to the bottom of the page, and then in the field next to a button called 'redraw', type in the numbers that are also displayed. Then click on the 'submit' button.

On the next page, there is a counter that counts down 30 seconds. The counter changes into a download button.

Thanks slowtiger! Even though I find it a little confusing without an example file, I think I should be able to figure it out. I'll read through your explanation some more times, hopefully that will help.

ADDED - I think I get it now thanks! -
