How do you rig your limbs?

Post by jayfaker »

Hey, I was wondering how you do your limb rigs. I know Greenlaw says he uses a single limb to make the bends nice, but then splits into 2 layers (one referencing the other) to allow overlapping. That's what I've been doing, but I've been trying to decide if I should have two cut lines on the limb like the image above, to prevent seams, or if I should just use one line and maybe move it a bit to one side or the other. How would you do it?

Any other suggestions/advice would be great too. Thanks!

I used separate shapes, with the overlap edge hidden or point width zeroed. That way the remaining outline makes the crease when it bends.

I always separate them both in two layers

To be honest, there are several ways you can follow to do limbs, it all depends on the versatility you want it your character and I will recommend you to use the concepts in your rig that you understand, so that you can tweak your character whenever and however you want.

so these are the bunch of tutorials I am dropping here according to difficulty or level that I would recommend to get to your bones to master them :D

Begineers level:

High level:

It isn't like I am judging any of the above tutorials above mentioned but that was the way it worked for me, it might be opposite to you or any other. So please make sure to find your way, what suits you and your pace take time. :D

Just wondering if there are any tutorials for rigging limbs at the "expert level" such as the YT videos in your comment striker?

I gave an answer to a similar question in a different forum not so long ago. That has a linked moho file with three examples which might help you decide which way to go.
