Timeline stripy rather than solid blue in smart bone action

Just trying to set up a smart bone action from smart bone dial for a lighting effect. I am doing Luke Marcatili's advanced lighting tutorial for moho on youtube, and am struggling. I managed to get one group layer of lights working on a smart bone dial but for some reason It is not working on the other.

I believe I have the masking settings correct for anyone familiar with this tutorial, and feel like the fact that the timeline switches from solid blue to stripey when adjusting the opacity of the light colour layer in the smart bone action, could be related to something I am doing wrong.
