Need help with Stroke Exposure Tool

Post by Mick »

How do I control the stroke exposure tool. The start point always seems to be random to me. I would love to be able to designate the point the stroke exposure animation starts, and also the direction it moves. I'm assuming this can be done, because without that type of control, the tool is pretty much useless.

Actually it's very easy. Let's say you draw a line from left to right. Now with stroke exposure you will see start at 0 and end at 100. If you increase the start percentage you shift right the starting point, if you decrease the end you shift left the end point. Unfortunately there is no way to set and drag a portion but with a bit of easy math you can do it anyway. For example: I want a 25% portion shifting from left to right, so (1)I set start at 0 and end at 25, move forward in the timeline then (2)set start at 75 and end at 100. To move it from right to left just invert (2) to (1).
You can be more precise if you clic and drag left or right on the canvas for the ending point. For the starting point hold alt and click.

A nice way to practice with stroke exposure is to duplicate some of the typical bursts used in motion graphics. I have dozen of these.
Here's an example from the web:

Thanks for the help. It's not really intuitive, but I think if I play with it for a while, I'll get the hang of it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Yeah I know at first it seems tricky but once you understand the concept it will really not request much work.
Glad to help :)

You can get a lot done with the stroke exposure tool but it is in urgent need of three things: Seperate timelines for start and end, control via motion graph, independence from point placement.

This tip from Greenlaw may help: Changing the 'origin' point for Stroke Exposure
Greenlaw wrote:All you need to do is delete the edge next to whichever point you want to become the new origin for the Stroke Exposure tool. THEN you draw from the open point next to your desired origin and--voila!--you have your new origin.

This 1000%. The stroke exposure is impotent without the ability to manipulate its speed/exposure in the motion graph.

I don't know if this helps but a Smart Bone Dial can be used as a speed controller for almost anything you can animate in Moho.

First create the Smart Bone Action and cycle the animation several times. Now you can retime the animation by simply keyframing the Smart Bone's rotation.

The number of of cycles you need to insert depends how slowly you need to animate the scene. For many typical animations, cycling the animation's duration three or four times before setting the last Smart Bone Dial key should be plenty but you should use your own judgement of course.

I can't believe I didn't think of that! I still hope they implement something in the future into the stroke but until then this seems like a great workaround. Thanks!

Yeah smart bones work with almost everything. I use them when i want to ease complex animations involving lot of channels. Just make sure you expand the animation enough in order to avoid glitchy problems
