Vegas Movie Studio 14
Has anybody upgraded to version 14 yet? They've been running the sale for several months now.
Just looking for some feedback on it. I upgraded from 12 to 13 when it was released a few years back, used it a few times then went back to version 12.
Seems like 13 was just thrown out there for the people using touch screens.
Anyway, if anybody grabbed it, is it worth it?

Re: Vegas Movie Studio 14
It only supports up to 20 layers, and multi-cam editing is quite limited as well (only 4).
Why anyone would choose this over the competitors is a mystery to me. Just get the free version of BlackMagic DaVinci Resolve instead - far more professional editing and a live link with Fusion.
Sorry to be so harsh, but I can understand why they've been running a sale when free options utterly outperform it.

Never used Vegas myself, but I can second the suggestion for DaVinci Resolve.

Re: Vegas Movie Studio 14
I upgraded, have used Vegas for years since version 5 I think. It has served me well and I did love it , but version 14 by magix?
This was an abominable hack job.
There is nothing of worth other than the global switches and prores .
Apart from the lack of features for a full version upgrade , I have to say I have never experienced a less stable piece of than Magix Vegas 14 , it crashes like more than any beta and is not in fact fit for release.
No support of note and no patches either.
Note that Magix don't even lend their name to it, I put it in because they deserved to be shamed
for overpricing, under delivering, and treating their new customer base like scum. I have to add that these customers were a gimme as much as a movie sequel.
Magix Vegas 14 is a cynical cash grab that should be shunned and avoided.

As for DaVinci Resolve... I actually have that installed. I remember opening it once but I was thinking it was just a specialty program for color editing. I guess it looks like I need to look at it again.

I have Vegas 14 but I rare even open it. I find myself using Pinnacle Studio most of the time. Currently trying to learn DaVinci Resolve and Fusion. Still thinking of getting HitFilm.

Hitfilm 4 express is currently free and does everything that I use to do in Adobe After effect!
Re: Vegas Movie Studio 14
I use Vegas Pro 15 and I like it...a lot in fact. I had switched from Premiere Pro about 15 years ago because Adobe had dropped some features I needed back then, and never looked back. VP 15 has been very stable for me. To me, Magix made several welcome workflow and UI improvements over the old Sony version that used to make me nuts. I'm glad Vegas Pro has native ProRes support now. (Although, realistically, I haven't had a request for ProRes output in a few years.)
When version 14 came out a year or two ago, I was experiencing sluggishness and crashing but that turned to be because i switched to .mov for a project. When I switched back to .avi and .mp4, Vegas became fast and stable again. I asked other users about this and they confirmed that Vegas doesn't like .mov files. I almost never use .mov so I just never noticed this before.
Anyway, I don't have any experience with Vegas Movie Studio, which I know is what the OP is asking about. I know it's the entry level version and basically a stripped down version of Pro, like the 10 video and 10 audio tracks mentioned earlier. (Pro supports an unlimited number of tracks.) I know Movie Studio is a lot cheaper than Pro but, yeah, if you need more 'pro-feature' capabilities, there are probably better options out there. (It's kinda like comparing Moho Debut with Moho Pro: sure, you can do fun stuff with Debut, but Pro is on a whole other level as far as features go.)
I don't have any experience with DaVinci Resolve--TBH, I thought Resolve was for color grading too but I guess I'm mistaken. FWIW, I have been using Fusion since 2001, and even though I use After Effects in a lot of work these days, Fusion is still my preferred compositing program. Anyway, just mentioning that because I'm a big fan of Fusion and I imagine BMD would put similar care and attention to DaVinci Resolve. I'll probably look into DaVinci Resolve at some point but so far I don't feel a need to switch from Vegas.

Re: Vegas Movie Studio 14
That said, what are some good recommendations for free or really cheap video editors? I get that question sometimes but I'm not sure what's current these days.
Edit: Oh, I didn't realize there is a free version of DaVinci Resolve. I guess I really should check it out. Still looking for other options though, and simpler the better because I'm looking for a cheap or free editor that kids can use. Thanks in advance for any info.

Yeah, Resolve is a good NLE with color grading, but not something I'd suggest for kids.Greenlaw wrote:That said, what are some good recommendations for free or really cheap video editors? I get that question sometimes but I'm not sure what's current these days.

Yeah, I think I would go for the paid version of Hitfilm or Di Vince Resolve before I'd pay for the latest Vegas.ruscular3d wrote:Hitfilm 4 express is currently free and does everything that I use to do in Adobe After effect!

Re: Vegas Movie Studio 14
I have been playing in Resolve and hitfilm recently.
Hitfilm is starting to look pretty good.
I wanted to love resolve, but got a distinctly 'meh' feeling from it and it didn't grow on me.
I'm not completely sold yet, but the compositing and effects features in hitfilm are really handy, Vegas comping always was super limited and unintuitive. Vegas did have awesome sound though and was quick, but they've lost me by lagging , with more fake new features than real ones and overcharging.

Vegas Pro 14 Edit for $20 in the new Humble Bundle Vegas Pro deal. Normally $399!
Also gets you Xara Web Designer Premium, various Magix tools, Magix Vintage Effects Suite VST plugin, and sounds. Quite a sweet deal for anyone interested in Vegas Pro.

Re: Vegas Movie Studio 14
I opened Resolve a few weeks ago and my pc laughed at me. It literally laughed. I guess I need a more powerful computer to run it. So I went ahead and splurged on Movie Studio 14. (Better than 13)
Herbert... I've never heard of Humble Bundle before so I guess my first question would be, is it legit? And I'm wondering if the "Steam Edition" of Edit is repackaged version of MS? If you can find a page with a features list or even a product comparison could you please link it?
