Can I make paint drip waaay down the canvas?

What I've done in the past is to have a mid grey object x808080 (with small variations for light and shade if needed usually in the range A0A0A0 -- 606060) and then have a colour image that I mask over that with blend mode overlay -- both can be animated. The stars from the wand in this https://youtu.be/iN-tXtQi-Yg?t=20 (time 0:19 to 0:28 approx.) were done that way: grey particles as a mask for a shape filled with a rainbow gradient. Is that the sort of thing you wanted?
