My first experiment with switch layers that are being controlled by an audio file.
Now I've worked out this bit, I have a few ideas I'd like to try next.

Thanks Chucky, yep smart bones and maybe even particle layers.
I'm reading a book called Experimental Animation - The orgins of a new art, it has many artists from the past who have done similar animations with sometimes nothing more than a camera and paper. I bet they would have loved Moho. Maestral told me about Oskar Fischinger, who's also mentioned in this book. I'm wondering if I could do an animation like his.
