New Year - Old Resources

Post by exile »

Wishing a good 2016 to the members of this great forum. Parting thought in the last hours of the old year: When anyone asks about useful general animation resources, the stock answer is Richard Williams' mind-boggling book "The Animator's Survival Kit". Great as it is, there are some less well known alternatives for non-professionals that not only cost less but could be an even better place to start. One of them is Preston Blair's "Animation 1" in the Walter Foster Art Series. He will get you drawing and posing with pencil and paper. Another "no excuse" resource for people who claim they can't draw is "Cartooning the Head and Figure" by Jack Hamm. Although he wrote for non-animating cartoonists, there are pages of walk and run cycles from all angles. Hamm worked as an animator so this is not surprising. Two inexhaustible guides for people on a tight budget. I'll close with the wish that good fortune will make tight budgets a thing of the past for us all.
