Great Idea

Post by Dr. Nick »

Funk, definitely, great idea!

This sort of thing is just the ticket to get over that learning curve. So, here's my submission:

http://www2.bc.edu/~nagelh/exploring.an ... Smokin.mov

http://www2.bc.edu/~nagelh/exploring.an ... mokin.anme

Lesson's learned:

1. Smoking is really hard! (which is why I now want to learn Urlik's smokin' effect ~~ beautifully done art BTW Urlik).

2. It's harder to give a ball personality than U think!

Great job so far everybody. Genete ~~ I thought your first effort was fine. The transformation was an interesting concept. But your other submission rocks too.

And, yeah, it's funny to see what folks are coming up with with the whole ball idea.

Here's my suggestion for a future monthly challange (and from the looks of things you've already got enough to keep this going for a year), but here's my two cent:

One of the fundamentals of movement is the transfer of weight. So a figure lifting a cardbord box is gonna look a lot different than one lifting a concrete block. Can we see a character lifting a *really* heavy object (and any gags that might ensue)?

Or is that too complex for this monthly activity...

Anyway. Great stuff is coming out of this folks....

I had to do another one, inspired by the gymnastic theme that have been showed here.

it keeps getting better and better...

I like your last one, Genete. Very visible and clear character in the big blob there.
And Ulrik, I was reminded of how important it is to HOLD poses when I saw your gymnastic ball... you did that really well.
I also liked dlangdevs "ball escape" - also very clear - almost as much as I still am most in love with Funk's original in the very first post. It has a mood and a suspense yet to be beaten by the rest of us... :-)

8) nice updates everyone...

Nice smoke effect Dr.Nick - i think your idea of showing weight is a good one - it doesnt necesserily have to be lifting, but like suggested before - maybe we post a generic boned stick man for eveyone to use? dunno if that would limit people though, as everyone likes to do things in different ways.

Ulric - i really like the momentum of your work... the thing i'm most struggling with at the moment is tempo - i tend to just animated - go forward random amount of frames - then animate again, then i'm constantly trying to fix timing which becomes hard once you have animation on different layers...
I want to experiment with faster, more extreme and deliberate movement and using holds...

Genete - you're entries are improving every time! :)

dlangdev - nice update :) still missing search lights and darker setting ;)

Another thought for a future challenge is to post an audio file which we all use as a background for timing (with or without dialogue, we'll have to vote)

Anyway, i got more posts to read this morning ;)

that's a bit of a challenge because i've read about emphasizing light by using darkness--anime/manga style.

i read from 'how to draw manga volume six' by hikaru hayashi, the author has good concepts about what you mentioned but it requires good talent and skill to implement it.

i'll try and see how far it will go.

more of hikaru's books ...

Hi,

I'm new here, and new to Anime Studio as well. I found this thread at the beginning of the month, thought it was a great idea (and probably not completely beyond by current lack of skill), and worked up something to share.

This is my first completed animation ever. I used Garage Band to make the soundtrack. There are a bunch of things I think I could improve, but rather than spend a bunch of time tweaking things, I'm declaring it "done" so that I can move on to the next project.

good effort spoinlar :) like the soundtrack... for some reason the youtube stops at 45 seconds but it says its double that length? ... what i would have liked to see is more rushing about once the siren starts :) make them seem more paniced... also you could try bouncing them, which is a great exercise, and make them smaller when behind and bigger when in front to give a sense of depth...

Phatthumb, you're probably right, we should come up with another theme - i still like the ball idea as its something very accessible to people of all experience levels...

i think we should think of a 'theme' or find a soundtrack for everyone to use - this first challenge was fun and had good response but maybe was too broad for focusing your practice... First person to complete an animation based on a particular theme of their choosing, post a new challenge and we'll all join in... also, if someone beats you to it, just open another challenge thread using YOUR theme or soundtrack, that way people can choose what theme they feel like following...?
