Chunky tail

Post by Gnaws »

Hi - I hope I'm posting this in the correct place. This is my first AS character post and my first "how do I?" post.

For some reason the eye doesn't mask out when rendering an SWF. It looks fine in any other format. And it looks fine when rendering individual frames (Ctrl+R) in AS. ??

Another problem - the tail. It gets kind of chunky when bent. I tried using less bones, and with less points.

Thanks in advance.

Hey it is a great design and character!! What happen to the eyes I see them perfect!!
Yeah I don't know why eye mask does not work in this file. Perhaps if you post it we could help analizing it.
About the tail I suspect that it is drawn in straight position so nodes have no initial curvature. At frame 0, you can select each point of the tail and then press to Smooth tool button or simply press 'M' in your keyboard. It will help for bending.

Hope it helps.

masks are not exported to swf.
see the AS help Reference>Export formats>optimizing for Flash.

for the tail, i think you must redraw it with less points. the minimal number of points.

i tried with this and works pretty good:

(PS: your monster and your background design is great!)

@genete - That "M" trick is awesome. Dunno if I would have found that one. Thanks!!

@selgin - thanks for the suggestion. I found with the curve of the tail I wanted, I'd need more points and more smaller bones. And you're right. AS won't export masking to SWFs. :(

@ DK - Very kind of you.

So here's my latest attempt. I think I got something pretty close by playing with the number of vertices, bones, and adjusting the area of influence till I got something that didn't look so jagged. It could probably be better with even more tweaking. I think it probably needs some secondary(?) bones to move the top of the head as the horns move, too.

Hey thanks everybody. I'm working on a few more designs right now for a game proposal. Hopefully I'll have something else in a few days.

Here's a sketch of the guy I'm currently developing.

Thanks again,
