Kurmi (smart bone rig)

Post by funksmaname »

Inspired by Selgin's recent escapades, I fancied doing something for fun today to test out smart bones so I randomly build this character... then started rigging, then thought I should test lipsync, so I found a random voice clip from a movie.

I didn't use/save any phenomes - the mouth is made up of 4 smart bone actions, so I just put it in the positions that felt right as I went along - I think it worked pretty well.

I used the new hold frame feature to hold poses - it really helped me move away from my 'constant floaty poses'

I didn't think smart bones could reliably act on the same set of points (mouth/eyes) but actually, this performed pretty darn well! There are extreme cases where it might not work (see Mike's skirt example where two legs with skirt actions go in the same direction) but these rare cases, imo, are no reason not to share points between smart bones now I've been playing with this for a bit!

All in all, this took a few hours from blank canvas to this point.

Ha ha...beautiful done, I love the Elvis lip, and also the way you solved the finger movements! Thanks for sharing your knowledge :)

hehehe, great!
Love your elvis mouth and the defaced mouth and teeth movement. I'm happy to inspire you, but this rig really have some smart ideas on it, so I'm inspired back :)

Really amazing. It's pretty clear these smart bones were heavily inspired by your videos showcasing Rudiger's Morph Dials script. I never bought AS8, but this video alone sold me on AS9.

Selgins projects are pretty gorgeous aren't they!

This new update has given as pro a real shot in the arm and makes it start to live up to it's name. Smart bones and Bezier interpolation alone will make my work life much more pleasant. Pretty inspiring all round and makes toonboom harmony a little more resistible :D

Now if only AS had a button to squeeze more hours out of the day.
