"You're Tearing Me Apart!"

Here's a super short test I did just for fun:

My audio and video reference is from the hilariously bad movie: "The Room" directed by the infamous Tommy Wiseau. This is a classic line for those who haven't seen the film.

What I did is I imported the video into Anime Studio and placed it side by side with my little "Elf" rig (minus the hat) and built my animation around that reference pulling out poses and expressions from that and then adding a lot of my own stuff as well making it more... "animated".

I didn't rotoscope it, but I kept a lot of the timing and poses from the reference and I actually think it turned out pretty good for just a day's work. It's nothing I would put on my demo reel, but I'm happy with it.

I found using the reference VERY helpful for lip sync especially. I think I changed that the least from the video reference. Everything else got pretty heavily altered.

A venerable technique that goes way back:

Alice In Wonderland test footage - Unbirthday Mad Tea Party - Disney

Of course, you can record your own acting as well:

Yeah that Alice in Wonderland and Horton stuff is incredible. I think the Horton reel is by a guy named Jeff Gabor who is known for his amazing live action reference.
