For all my Australian acquaintances...

Sidney the Great White Shark

(you don't think his speedo is too tight do you? ;) )

Hmmm...
this character has some sort of mixed styles that makes it difficult to digest...
I don't know exactly where are those strange things... maybe the eye is not proper to the whole design? do I miss an eyebrow?

Also those bumps on the stomach... I don't know if they make it fat or muscled.

I also dislike the deformed curves of the tail. I think that a smooth tail would make it more stylised.

Last thing, the light comes from the top left of the image (behind the camera) according to the eye bright and the shading of the surf table. Shouldn't the dropped shadow be at the right?

I cannot gift your ears telling that it is a good design. You have demonstrated a very high level for drawings so I want you to continue on that line.

Regarding to the speedo... better I don't comment ;)

This is the risk to expose your art work here :)

and please please please, fix that bad outline connection on the tip of the nose. It is very noticeable.

I like how it looks. Just would make some gradients a little more sharpened (I don't know how to say it, less soft...).

I would love to see the construction curves, can I? can I? :D

I like it....

I would change the shadow or highlight on the board to match the shark though.

***I think we need a bigger boat***

Yeh those budgie smugglers need a bit of room 'round the wedding tackle.

Gradients?

Is the sharks coloring from an image or are you masking some crazy vector gradient action? If it is all vector gradients I'd love to see the work file or a tutorial, I don't know how you would wrap some of the gradients around the nose and such.

Hmm...maybe some masking and layer or style shade going on too?

All the shading is done in AS 6. No images. The soft edge shading is just that... soft edge shape effects. Actually this is a straight "trace" from a sketch.

Keep in mind the new AS 6 has the cool gradient tools. You can move and change the orientation, scale, starting point etc of gradients. The other shading elements along edges are either shape shading effect or single strokes (the nose highlight) with soft edge and width changes to taper the effect.

I used this original sketch, scanned, cleaned up and colorized in Photoshop as my tracing image in AS:

Gotcha, I wasn't even thinking about soft edge shapes, that makes perfect sense.

So, you have all these "color shapes" masked by the main outline body vector yes?

And since they are all within the same skeleton all shapes bend and transform seamlessly correct?

I REALLY like this character, here he is with a little Blue lovin':

Image

He needs a bit more shading just above the waist to give his belly some dimension. Also needs a bit more character in the face to give him a personality.

BTW the security guard and "Franken-Nixon" on your website are fantastic!

I liked the shark first off.

I really liked Blue's additions, it really looks "Wet" with those changes.

Maybe a tongue would be a good addition, possibly only shown in certain mouth vowel sounds.

Of course, we'd really love to see how you make it move.
