Open Source Alternatives to ASP!

Post by MaxHammond »

Was reading the other thread about AS going open source which i personaly think would be bad for the program and the users as at only $200 there is not much to gain from it being free ie only $200 but a massive amount to lose, but anyways was looking and thought you might find these interesting:

SYNFIG
http://www.synfig.com
the pics look awsome and comparable to AS some of the renders look 5star the workspace seems to display gradeints and textures which must be a plus

Blender

Yes blender the 3D Program, but did you know it animates and renders 2D illustrator files just as well. with BONES as well!!!!!!!

And of course you could always just render 3d with a cell shade shader

KToon

Seems to still be in a very basic stage and lack a user base but its free!

anyways just some stuff to look at!
New to Anime Studio just want to better my self and make some funny toons :D

Yeah, I started to think that too after reading Genete's earlier post about "Synfig".

And I look ONLY because I love vector animation.

The "Prologue" piece demonstrates fantastic technical promise. The lighting effects(?) and particle generators look pretty robust, too. Was done entirely in Synfig?

Hehe talk to ulrik... (he had a compiled version that is fully functional like the linux one)

Watch him here in action:

The binary release is the one that is not maintained by no one (by the moment). Take account that mainly the source code is the same. You can always build it by your self. But requires a bit of effort...

It's worth.

I can wait for a mac version. There's still quite a few bugs that need ironing out apparently. Hopefully by then there'll be a mac developer to slot right into place and be all like "synfig for the mass" and i'll be like "yay"... this will be an open dialog. Feel free to join in!
