The sad truth is that for both the Windows and the Linux versions many more developers seem to be active and willing to participate. I have seen this happen in other open source projects as well. I am unsure what the underlying reason would be - perhaps open source developers avoid Macs? Thing is, MacOSX is a minefield when it comes down to OpenGL, etc. At least, that's what I have been told and what I have read.
Even the Linux version is getting a lot of love now.
Turtletooth (Jeremy Bullock, check out his vids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re-eOvn4miU) just released an experimental version (*Windows only) with a number of interesting new features:
- horizontal timeline! A much requested feature. To switch between Xsheet and horizontal timeline view, click on the word "Xsheet" in the left top of the Xsheet. To switch back to Xsheet view, click on "Timeline". And yes, xsheet and timeline windows can be shown simultaneously (as many as you require).
- note column: add notes to the Xsheet.
- Lip Sync popup for Papagayo import
- soundtrack export
- drawing substitution works on sub-Xsheet levels
Various other improvements and fixes (guided drawing, max gap size fill, vector brush snapping, etc.)
Also nice: this version is self contained, and portable. Copy it to a USB drive, and work off that, if you like. Great for students and classroom environments.
Please consider a small donation - Jeremy has done tons of work (voluntarily) to improve Opentoonz. He teaches animation classes with Opentoonz.

For the first time of its existence as open-source tool, OpenToonz got used in production of full-featured anime movie – it was announced that it was used as part of the production of director Hiromichi Yonbayashi ‘s latest work “Mary and Witch Flower” (Studio Ponoc Production) which was released on July 8, 2017.
A new branch of Opentoonz is available which includes both the horizontal timeline AND the MyPaint bitmap painting brush engine! And both 64bit and 32bit builds are provided, which is nice for users stuck in a 32bit Windows.
Opentoonz seems to be taking off like Blender now that it's open source. The biggest hurtle I see to getting started with it is the lack of documentation.

Updated portable version! GUI refinements, guided inbetweening, and more. Touch screen controls!
I see they released a Linux version in appimage format. I may have to play around with that one.

Yeah, hopefully a Linux version will bring more programmers to work on it. I don't think there's a consumer market for the Linux version in itself.

Horizontal timeline is getting more love. The draw order is now corrected (top to bottom approach like in other layer-based applications), and a zoomable timeline is finally here!
