Digital Video, the makers of TOONZ, and DWANGO, a Japanese publisher, announced today they have signed an agreement for the acquisition by Dwango of Toonz, an animation software which was independently developed by Digital Video (Rome, Italy).
Digital Video and Dwango agreed to close the deal under the condition Dwango will publish and develop an Open Source platform based on Toonz (OpenToonz). Effective Saturday March 26, the TOONZ Studio Ghibli Version will be made available to the animation community as a free download.

OpenToonz will include features developed by Studio Ghibli (*Toonz Ghibli Edition) which has been a long time Toonz user. Through OpenToonz, Dwango will create a platform that will aim to have research labs and the animated film industry actively cooperating with each other.

Toonz going open source was a really unexpected announcement. I have never used Toonz, but I'm excited to see what it can do. This has been a really interesting week.

Yes, 2016 is turning out to be a big one for 2d animation software. So far we have had Krita, the "new" (Flash) Animate, a new 2d cutout animation addon for Blender (which already has seen further improvements), ClipStudio's animation tools, and now this!

Toonz going open source, however, could potentially be quite disruptive for products such as Anime Studio and Toonboom Advanced. Harmony is currently too much entrenched in studios, but still.

If the open source version turns out to be the full version with fbf animation, nodal compositing, IK, - the Full Monty - basically what studio ghibli uses in production, then we users are in for a treat. This, however, spells potential disaster for freelancer animator oriented commercial products. The feature list competes well with ToonBoom Harmony, but reading from user comments the workflow and GUI is just better and more well thought out than Harmony.

We'd gain access to a proven feature length animation production tool which cost $6000.

Super interesting times for every digital animator! :-) Good stuff.

It's live! And it is the FULL version which Studio Ghibli uses in its productions!

https://opentoonz.github.io/e/index.html

Believe it or not - it is open sourced. As far as I can tell, this is a great companion to AS.

Word of warning to the uninitiated: This is some serious in-depth 2d animation software. But it is absolutely AMAZING this is now open sourced. I have been looking for more traditional animation software with X-sheet functionality - THIS IS IT!

There is hardly any support or tutorials for this online is there?
Which is a real shame because I've had a look at it and I haven't got a bloody clue if I'm honest.

There are some pdf files in English here which offer some help.
http://www.toonz.com/htm/support/suppw.htm
But there is very little tutorial information out at there at the minute.

Somebody called HulluMel has uploaded a video tutorial to Youtube for OpenToonz.

Which is very helpful as it's for this version of OpenToonz which has just been released.

And another one uploaded by BooneBum,

The main "issue" with the GUI is mainly caused by Studio Ghibli's workflow, which was based on a paper-based workflow. This means large parts of the paperless animation workflow remain hidden for the user when this version is first ran.

It is relatively easy to "unhide" these, though. One user created a quick tutorial showing exactly that:

After adding this new "Animation" room, the Toonz Harlequin manual becomes quite usable.

And the entire interface can be easily customized through CSS/LESS (easy if you know CSS and LESS) - someone already posted a more modernized look: https://github.com/cryovat/opentoonz-theme-mori

After playing around more with OpenToonz, I am extremely impressed. It more or less is comparable with ToonBoom Harmony, and once the interface is "reset", it is quite intuitive and simple in use. But you do need some knowledge of the traditional x-sheet animation approach.

PS Manual link: http://www.toonz.com/cgi-shl/download/7 ... 0Guide.pdf

Be sure to watch the previously posted tutorial first, and create that animation room.

Gentlepeople:

I have started a YouTube Channel dedicated to demonstrating the functions of OpenToonz. I start from the very beginning, assuming no prior knowledge.

The first videos cover how to set up OpenToonz to match the Toonz Harlequin workflow and Manual - followed by detailed information on using the Level Strip and X-Sheet to create and modify Frame-By-Frame animations:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-t3I3 ... CvsxUkBZRA

I hope these inform.

Gentlepeople:

There is a new video that demonstrates how to use the Custom Vector Brushes, Raster Textures and "Special" Styles which are supplied with OpenToonz.

This video also shows how to properly arrange some asset folders so that they can be readily found by OpenToonz - and then applied:
