Free 3D moviemaker - but MASSIVE download

Post by Mohlar »

Moviestorm is a Java-based program which may interest anyone who wants to get into 3D movie-making. The core program is free and fully functional. You can buy add-ons if you want to (at very reasonable costs). But do check the size of the initial download. There's plenty of time for a 3-course meal!

Can't help with that - I had no problems and there's a VERY active forum for queries.

You may also want to check out Antics3D - much more stable than MS in my experience and the Home edition is also free.

No longer under development and the site is now offline. Version 4 was the last free, un-timebombed release but I do not know if it can still be found. I think an earlier version is available somewhere - but as I have v.4, I never needed to check. If you wanted to check it out, you'd need to find someone to send you a copy. As far as I know, all support or extension packs are also unavailable unless - once again - you can find someone to send you copies.

If you try this, expect a very steep learning curve unless you're already familiar with 3D object creation. Without such knowledge, I'm not convinced Blender is ideal for actual movie making, but these links gives a few examples of possibilities:

Antics huh?:? That was a yucky program indeeed, I was bought a copy by a producer who thought it was going to be the next big thing and wanted some previz done with it. I quickly learned what a disaster it was, being as about manoeuvrable as the titanic. No wonder it hit a berg.
The thing that really annoyed me was that each prop and or set pack you bought had to be installed and resided individually as an entry in the program and consequently the add/remove programs list.
In the end I told the producer that it was a waste of my time and his money and had as much expressive flavour as a mouthful of sand, and for presentation previz was probably going ensure no interest from prospective investors or collaborators, so in his own interest I refused to use it any more (it was also going to reduce my standard of work and harm my own reputation in the process).
I was generously offered by Brad the product manager ( or something) to update to version 5 which apparently fixed most of it's more problematic issues for $35.00 instead of the full price, somehow I didn't bother.
Looks like I saved $35.00
So I guess I can safely clean my 'puter now from all those gigabytes of useless antics stuff.....JOY :D
