Don't get me wrong. It made me laugh, too. Even the second time I watched it. But it also gave me a "I made myself sad" moment when it sunk in what I was laughing at.
This may be part of the director's intent; it brings you into the psychology and motives of the husband, and makes you forget your own motives and values for a moment. And as the husband pushes it further and further, your own values are more likely to protest, bringing about a sort of awakening. But of course, I have no idea what the director's intent really was.
That's why I was careful to say that I didn't like what happened to his wife rather than that I didn't like the story.
