Why isn't LM replying to the forums as often? It would be nice if he could clear some of this up.

That's understandable. I have a child myself. It wouldn't hurt to take 5 minutes out of the day to do replies though.

Might be worth a shot anyway, I guess.

They have Manga Studio EX on sale for about $209 USD... until August 14-15 or something like that.

Sorry I'm not 100% on the details.

Rhoel wrote:I just had a nasty shock - I nipped onto the eFrontier web Store and tried to buy Manga Studio - a dummy run for buying future copies of Moho. I have European credit cards and PayPal, both of which are acceptable to eFrontier.

So I am just a little surprised (and disappointed) to see the following.
We're Sorry. The requested product is not available for purchase at your location.
I am not unduly worried about sourcing the MS software - I have studio facilites elsewhere and if I need it I should be able to get it shipped - we had to do that with Moho. I don't have a need for comic creation software - just not into that market ... Iwas just testing the system to see if it worked, and it didn't.

The post was to point out that blocking sales to countries encourages software piracy. It's a double edged sword - anyone who wants to sell legal software here is on a hiding to nothing because the cracked software industry is so efficient and well established. In our studio, there are regular surveys to see who is using what and how many licences we have - I suspect we are one of the few companies which actually has legal MS O/S systems.

It's interesting to note my introduction to Moho 3 was not through LM's marketing, animation shows or word of mouth - it was on a pirated compilation disc, ironically called Anime Studio, a collection of hacked animation software such as Animo 3.x, toon boom and a bunch of others.

Linux Support

Post by jorgy »

As long as we're talkiing about our hopes and fears for the new versions and new partnership with e-frontier, I hope that support for the linux platform continues. Looking through e-frontier's website, their existing products do not seem to have linux support. This was a big selling point to me, and I assume others as well. I hope that this was part of the discussions.

Keeping my fingers crossed,

Let's hope support don't die like it has everytime they start working on a new version.

Support was much more available with just Mike around

MarkBorok wrote:Well, the box cover art is stupid for two reasons: first, making that kind of complex art with Moho would be pretty much impossible for all practical purposes; second, no sane person would try to animate artwork that complex in any program, or with traditional tools.
I agree with that.
If one of those box designs is chosen it gives a different impression than what one could do with it using Moho/Anime Studio. (Of course the efront suits answer would be "We included a .png image of the cover illustration in the extras CD for people to use.")
I doubt anyone could draw that type of detailed art using Moho. And then continue it over an animation....nah.
--------
This was always a small problem I have had with Moho and its examples of "Moho Animation" it shows on its website. One gets the impression that these sample animations were made entirely in Moho. But it is not true - most used one, two, three or more additional programs (Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, etc.) to get the finished animation.
I remember my first shock using Moho when I found one could only use one soundclip...and then one could not place it anywhere with the animation. Basically worthless.

Silly me, I completely forgot I got a promotional postcard at Siggraph.

The front of the card features sample artwork created in Moho, none of it anime-styled. The text is "Create your own Cartoons and Animations." The description on the back says nothing about anime, stating "From hobbyists making cut-out animation, to professionals who work in video and film..." It also mentions the possibility of using digital photographs, which of course is also not very anime-style.

Sorry, getting my scanner out of mothballs would be a real hassle for just one scan.

The front of the card shows stills from the animation of: that singing girl that we all know and love, "Cat Bastard", something from Squeaky Pictures and one from the talented people who brought us that Pepsi commercial that looks like it wasn't done in Moho at all. The other four stills I don't recognize.

The text on the back gives a pretty accurate descritpion of Moho's capabilities, including the 3D ones, failing to mention the particle system, animated lines/fills, bone dynamics and other features. It also says the program is available for Windows and Mac, with no mention of Linux. I'm sure this is just a marketing decision and some arrangement will be made to keep the Linux people happy.

Dear Moho Fans!

Post by Fahim »

Hi Everyone,

Hope you're all well. My name is Fahim Niaz, I am a friend of Mike Clifton's and a product manager for e frontier. I've had the priviledge of meeting some of you folks at the cons, and tradeshows. Some of you I know personally.

It's amazing to see the amount of passion that you all have for Moho/Anime Studio. It gives me great pleasure knowing that I am working on a product with such a great user base.

Mike mentioned to me that the life blood of Moho is in it's users and their love for this great application. I want to let you know that I will personally make sure that we always take good care of you, and Moho as we move into this new relationship with LostMarble. I'd like to bring as much awareness as possible to this product and this can not be done without you. You all understand this program so well, some of you have used it since the beginning. That's why I really appreciate your comments, and I completely understand some of the concerns and comments you may have. This is only natural. I want to reassure you, that Mike and I will always take all of your comments into account and provide you with an even better product as new versions come about.

Mike and I discussed many aspects of Moho at length before making any decisions. As you already know, Moho/Anime Studio isn't just about creating anime, cartoons or even cutout animations, you can do much more with it. We tested the product and the name in focus groups, and we even tested it out using a panel of animation industry specialists (including folks from specialty animation schools, and also animation studios such as ILM, Dreamworks, and Pixar).

Both Mike, and I feel like Moho/Anime Studio will be a great addition to the existing line up of tools at e frontier, and we'll be able to add new functionality and feature sets as we roll out into new versions.

Out of respect to all the Moho users out there, Mike and I want you all to have a happy transition over to Anime Studio. That's why we've contacted you, the user base, before making any major press release. This is the least we can do, you're part of the family, and you need to know what's happening. We initially sent the letter to all registered users, now it's been posted on this thread. Mike will officially post the letter in the forums too. Like some of you mentioned, the best way to spread the word about this wonderful program is through word of mouth and I believe all of you will make great ambassadors of Anime Studio once it's released.

Thank you. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or comments.

Welcome to the boards Fahim! If there are more like you at e-frontier then I'm convinced the customer support for Anime Studio is in good hands. The announcement about the free upgrade was an extremely gracious move on the part of e-frontier, and that alone says a lot about the kind of people working there. Good luck at launch and I'll certainly do my part to spread the good word about Anime Studio.
