Jobs section -- "get rich quick" posts

Post by jahnocli »

Could one of the moderators please remove these ads from the Jobs section -- they seem to have sneaked under the radar. Congratulations to all of you for keeping the forum spam-free -- it's a pleasure to come here again!

Yeh I have just noticed these. Why is so much spam coming to the Moho forums lately?

Most are posted by SPAMbots, nasty little bits of computer code which automatically troll the internet looking for phpBB forums, then automatically complete the membership application and post junk to the site. Many of the advertisers are in the ex-soviet states.

In general over the past month, the time spam has survived on the site can be measured in hours, often in minutes. Yesterday morning, I spotted a new member as he signed up. I waited the couple of minutes till he posted a "buy Viagra" type message, then deleted it. It must have been really frustrating for him as he clearly was still online and his message had already been junked.

The latest version of the forum software has a visual authentication mode which stops 99% of the autoposters. Determined spammers will always get through ... they get more and more devious in the way they hide their ads. For me, I enjoy the game ... there are fast ways of tracking what they are doing, but I'm not going to make that public as it reduces te moderators edge.

If you see spam that is lurking for more than 24 hours, send a PM to one of the moderators with the link and we'll kill it off.

regards

Thanks, Rhoel -- using the forum is a lot more pleasurable without spam!
