how to make auto lip syncing more natural?

Post by RyanSurrey »

I am completing a 3 minute animation every 2 days and the only thing being left is the lip sync which I have no time to work on. So i am using the auto lip sync. but that is making the character look like it is done with 2 frames in flash. is there any way to make it a little more natural? like Manga or anime cartoons do? I mean look at this:

All they do is like what auto lip sync does. but it looks way natural.

The Doraemon example is an interesting one because the voice recording was likely dubbed over the existing animation, so the task really fell to the actor to achieve a natural-looking lip sync.

I'll only mention that auto lip sync (which typically uses 10 phonemes) usually results in a busy looking lip sync. You can get by with fewer shapes as recommended in Dermot O' Connor's blog:

If you want the best results, you really need to set the lip sync keys manually.

O'Connor's tutorial is fascinating. Another possible approach including faster and slower methods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fKjMvlP4CE

An auto-sync script that seems to work better than Papagayo is available for $10 here: https://sellfy.com/strider2000 It works with the standard 10-11 phonemes, the script can be tweaked.
