How do I stop a gradient from moving on a character?

I have a character with dreadlocks and a gradient on the sides of his head to look like a fade on the side that matches his skin color. When my character moves the gradient stays put and it looks like the hair is changing color. How do I get the gradient not to move and stay in place when the character moves?
If this is even possible.
