Does GPU acceleration matter?

Post by RichardU »

I just upgraded from a GTX 770 to a GTX 1070. Benchmark scores are about double for fps. However ...

in ASP (latest version fully updated) on my Win10-64 Pro (fully updated) my time to render 3,600 frames to PNG was unchanged at 30 minutes for both the old card and the new card. I have GPU acceleration checked in both my display quality as well as Edit/Preferences.

Am I missing something, or does a faster GPU not make a difference?

Thanks, Richard

I don't think GPU affects final rendering at all in Anime Studio. I believe it only affects realtime interactivity/playback and preview animation performance.

(If I'm wrong about that, somebody please correct this.)

GPU acceleration only works in the editor. At render time, only the CPU is used.

Bummer. But thanks for the info. I wonder if SM will beef up the rendering engine anytime soon.

If you're complaining that 3600 frames in 30 minutes is slow, NEVER do 3D. :D

I'm thrilled when I can get my 3D animation renders down to 10-15 minutes per frame. :D

I wanna go fast!

It just seems a potential resource is going to waste. For that matter, I'd love to run a render farm with all my computers working together.

Since you're allowed to install AS on up to three machines, you can use one to run the batch exporter while continuing to animate on another.

It just goes to show ya' - it's never enough.

Especially in the software industry.

Yeah, one of these days we'll just have a metal spike we shove into the back of our heads and hit the "make awesome animation" button with the "instant render and upload" option checked.

Actually, I would be all for a native network render controller for ASP/Moho.

At my workplace, we have ASP working with the studio render farm but I know it took a bit of custom coding to make it work that is beyond my meager programming skills.

If there was an 'easy to setup' native controller in ASP/Moho, I'm sure I would use it with the small render farm in my home studio.

Hey Richard, was there any display improvements with the 1070 in ASP?
I'd love know if frame rate, masking display , polygoning and all those things are better with the new card. :?:

Yes, I'd especially like to know if masking previews are improved.

Did I read somewhere that Cartoon Saloon (or another studio) had ASP patched into Deadline and their render farm — or am I imagining things?

I wouldn't expect gpu to effect rendering without a gpu render toggle (as apps have for that ), I AM curious to see how much a 1070 improves display speed though and all that stuff.
