What's he doing here?

Post by djwaterman »

Please check this out, I don't know the language so I'm just speeding through it, and he has an interesting arrangement for having a character walk when moving the foot bones. I've never seen this before and I'm wondering what's working with what here?

That is exactly the behaviour that I need! How I can get this? And why he can move fixed bones?

It's a very clever rig!
I was able reproduce the behavior, but I'm not sure if it's exactly the way he made his character.
Anyway, here is a tutorial :)

yeah - it's a clever rig!

Note the smartbones on the right of the screen (if I got the gist of what was going on correctly!!) which are linked to actions on the leg target bones

The video is essentially a trailer for his (paid) courses - the closing screens (around 5:30) describe parts 1 and 2 of his course on Inverse Kinematics in ASP11.

the stated purpose (from his website)

1. Give the full method for creating, rigging and animating vector characters in ASP
2. Improve your animation and speed up the process.
3. Teach you to animate four-legged creatures. Analysis of the walk cycle (dogs, cats, robots with four legs).

Wow, that is a neat rig but I'm blown away at how fast Victor figured it out though I guess I shouldn't be considering he's the master. :D

This could be your next webinar. Advanced rigging concepts.

For a bipedal character I sometimes use such a structure made of bones: https://yadi.sk/d/07l4Y_m7sDRqS

That's really awesome! BTW what is the keyboard shortcut to set up target bones so fast like you did Victor?

Thanks, Mtbuck
With the Parent Bone tool:
- Alt + Click to select a bone (or none, if you click on empty workspace)
- Ctrl + Click to assign a target to the selected bone

Most of this modifiers can be read in the Status bar.

That's a very cool rig, and nice work figuring out how it works!

Hi Victor!

Two quesitons:

One, what is the shortcut you used to make bones point and turn into target bones?

Two, how did you "freeze" the bones on frame one?

Hi!
guyver93 wrote:One, what is the shortcut you used to make bones point and turn into target bones?
With the Reparent Bone tool selected, Ctrl+Click over the bone you want to be the Target.
(All the shortcuts for tools always appear on the Status bar)
guyver93 wrote:Two, how did you "freeze" the bones on frame one?
Ctrl+F (Or menu Bone - Freeze Pose)
