AS Pro 10 BENCHMARKS

Post by dkwroot »

The holiday season is here and I image some of you guys are planning to upgrade your computers. This is the perfect opportunity to do some Pro 10 benchmarks to help folks determine how much certain upgrades can improve render time. You can also use this as a chance to benchmark your current PC and then compare it with your upgraded one.

In order to benchmark, we're going to be using a scene that comes pre-packaged with AS10. Make sure Anime Studio is the only program running to ensure best results.

Instructions:
1. Go to File > Project Settings and set the Dimensions to "Youtube HD"
2. In Anime Studio, go to File > Import > Scenes > CK Crustacea > Crustacea
3. After the scene is imported, go to File > Export Animation
Use these settings: *Note that we are only rendering 50 frames!
Image
4. Record how long it takes for the render to finish.

Post the following Information:

RENDER TIME:
CPU:
RAM:
OS:
HDD: (Just basics, like solid state or not. Let us know if using RAID)

---

I'll start us off by giving my results:

Render Time: 5:56
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500k
RAM: 12 GB of DDR3 1600
OS: Windows 7 Home
HDD: 2 Solid State ( RAID 0 )

'Shampie' AS10.1.1 results using my very old vista.

Render Time: 38:37 Ouch! Good thing I'm not in a hurry!
CPU: Intel(R)Core(TM)2 Duo E7200 @2.53GHz
RAM: 3GB
OS: Window Vista Home Premium
HDD: non-raid

Will be fun to compare when a 'new' system arrives...

CPU: i7 4.00GHz
RAM: 16 GB
OS: Win 8.1
HDD: ssd os non-raid

rendered 1 to 50 even though the first 15 frames aren't meant to be rendered.

I notice two of you have solid state HHD's. That may be a key upgrade.

You guys are awesome! This kind of information is extremely useful for people planning upgrades, so keep 'em coming. Just in case some folks are wondering, I'm having you guys export to PNG sequences so that we can establish a baseline for render time without getting any Codec's involved. In general, I think most of us render to PNG sequences anyway and then composite our scenes in post production so it seemed like a practical test.

@minstrel
Wow! You would get huge improvements from just a modest upgrade. If money is tight, I'd suggest looking at an AMD. Also, I wasn't aware AS 10 supported Vista?

@chucky
Yep, wait time is render time. I wasn't aware the animation was supposed to start a little later, but since this is just a benchmark it shouldn't cause any problems. Also, nice rig! :D Are you using an i7-4790K?

@3deeguy
The benchmark might be a little bias since Crustacea uses Images instead of vectors. This could (in theory) give a slight advantage to solid state drives. I'm thinking about setting up another render test using just vector art and then comparing the differences, but I think the difference would be negligible. Anyway, I love solid state drives and can't recommend them enough. If you're on the fence about getting one this season, I'd suggest taking the plunge as prices are very good this year. I'm actually planning to buy two more. :D

@dueyftw
I would LOVE to see how a Surface Pro 2 or 3 compares to this. That would be an interesting comparison.

Crustacea does use a fair few vectors actually. The insect particles, the lens flare and the waterfall which uses threshold and really drags.
The bokeh are images converted from AS vectors as they were super slow to render in the display even.

Actually interesting to note how well the graphics cards are dealing with the display.
As does a fantastic job on this complex scene, you go into the card settings and customise the ASP settings too .
Another set of benchmarks might be fps this one vs image quality, both using GPU acceleration or custom program settings.
I'm using a GTX 760 but wouldn't know the best measure of fps, the display is fantastic though can hardly tell between the display and the render.

This is my specs:

Render Time: 8:01
CPU: Intel Core i7 2,93GHz
RAM: 32GB DDR3 1333MHz
OS: Mac 10.10.1
HDD: SSD non-raid

Great to see all benchmarks to compare, great idea!

Render Time: 6:10
CPU: Intel i7 920@3.6GHz
RAM: 48GB
OS: Win7 Pro 64bit
HDD: Revodrive X2 240gb (4xSSD Raid drive @1.3gb/s)

Not bad for a CPU released in October 2008. Six years ago now! A shame AMD is no longer a viable competitor.

Ugh. Pretty much in line with low end laptop performance. :roll:

It looks like there is a 5 minute barrier. I'm curious if someone can break it.
