Limit to size of imported OBJ files

Does anyone have a ballpark figure for the size of OBJ files that can be imported into AS Pro 6.1

Small 3D objects import fine (although somewhat slow). I tried to import a large street scene and the program crashed. Was I being too ambitious trying to import a large OBJ file into a 2D package?

Any ideas?
