How was this dramatic lighting effect created?

In the Moho gallery under "Arts and Entertainment" the clip "The Oil Lamp" (2nd column, 3rd row).

You see the rim light on the edges of the characters that is being cast from the fire light. How was this effect accomplished? I'm planning out an animation that is set at night and this would be a great effect to add in.

Likely a mask was used with a second layer defining the 'glow' area; then the transparency was probably adjusted over time.
