I remember when programs stopped supporting Gif because of copyrights and licensing costs. If that still is the case I wouldn't hold my breath...And I have to agree with Spacmodic Cheese in the sarcasm department. I don't see much purpose for Gif these days, there are better formats available.

I agree, there are tons of really bad animated gifs out there:

But maybe this is our chance to turn the web around? Create some really nice ones? After all, we are animators!

In another thread, Benvindo made an animated gif from a still that pixelwks had created:

This is the high-quality sort of thing that we can do to replace the negative image of animated gifs.

To start, how about our avatars here? Hey LM, how about increasing the maximum avatar size so we can put animated gifs in our avatars? :-)

The Unisys GIF patent expired a couple of years ago:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF#Unisys ... nforcement

Unfortunately, if you are creating content for the web and need an alpha channel, you are stuck with gifs because the browser of the majority (Internet Explorer) doesn't do transparent PNGs properly.

So, even though this is 2005, I had been creating a website and in order for it to render properly on all browsers, had to use a GIF. Unfortunately, there is still a place for them.

This, of course, is not nearly as important as our conversation about how animated gifs on the web suck. :-)

Until IE fixes the PNG thing you might be interested in this page linking to a couple sites with workarounds.
