I don't know whether this is a bug, or an as-yet unimplemented feature.
The properties panel for 3D layers has a tab for masking, but whatever I switch on or off, the 3D object (within a masking group, of course) seems to remain unaffected by masking in any way.

Actually, masking does work for 3D layers, but can't be previewed in the editing view. Select File->Render to see the maskign effect. When you export the animation as a movie file, the masking will be properly rendered as well.
