Kedric, I'm curious about your youtube monetization experience. How many subscribers or daily views would you look for to determine if a channel is likely to monetize decently on an animation? Are you thinking of a Machinima size channel?

Even OneyNG who easily breaks several million views per video is upset about it. https://youtu.be/E6-KsWv9ZAI?t=1m1s

I have a friend that regularly breaks 100k views on his channel and he told me that he survives because of donations on patreon. I'm sure that some people have found a way to get around the model and work it to their advantage, but for most people the system is screwing them badly.

I’m sorry for not responding sooner.

Lwaxana, current youtube CPM is between $1-$14 per thousand views. It depends on time of year, what network you are with, and other things. It is true that animation tends to make a bit less but it’s still pretty good. Animation takes a lot of work so in a way it's not fair that you might spend 40 hours to make your $500 while a game commentator can play a game for 10 minutes and make $500. Here is how to calculate. I typically always plan for the worse . . . so I assume a channel is going to get a terrible CPM at $2 per thousand views. You can expect to get ¼ of your subscribers to watch one of your new videos if the thumbnail, title, and description are marketed well. So if you hope to get $500 for a video, assume you need 1 million subscribers to get $250,000 views. Of course, if you know you are getting a better CPM you can plan from your experience. I estimate starting an animation channel and bringing it to 1 million views would require a full time effort for at least 2 years and seeing little monetary gain. It's mostly not worth it.

DKwroot, this RubberNinja video is nearly a year old. Youtube algorithms seem to go through massive changes every three months. When researching youtube trends you typically need to look for something much more recent than this. RubberNinja has not uploaded anything in months and with less than 25 videos he is still making roughly $1,000 a month (very conservatively). Ricepirate’s video is also nearly a year old. He barely uploads one video a month and is making at least $2,500 a month (very conservatively). OneyNG has uploaded 10 videos in the last year (many less than a min long) and is making an estimated $1,200 a month (very conservatively). So when you hear these guys saying “it’s hard to make a decent wages on youtube anymore” you need to put this into context. These guys are making $1,000-$10,000 monthly doing barely any work anymore if any.

I know people who are making much less than 100k views per animation, upload less than weekly, and are comfortable with their $30,000+ salary.
