Is there a list of mouth images w/corresponding phonemes

Post by Craigar »

Hi There.

I'm brand new to animation.
Is there a list of images of what each mouth is supposed to look like (next to each's corresponding phoneme) exactly appropriate to Papagayo / AS?

I'm preparing a cut out animation.

Thanks,
Craigar

The sample mouths used in Papagayo are images in the Papagayo application folder. You can open these in an image editor or even import them into AS if you wanted to trace them.

Those images should give you enough to use as reference for the phoneme shapes.

The names also give a clue to the "shape" or position of the mouth:

AI
O
FV
MBP
E
U
L
etc
W

Put your mouth in those positions to make those sounds and look in a mirror. There's your reference.

Thanks, HV.
Now I have a good idea how to fashion my mouths.

But it also brings up a new question.
On my mac, the Papagayo folder contains a file called "Mouths.moho" (along with the App and Tutorial folder) .
"Mouths.moho" doesn't open in anything but AS: not in Photoshop, not Graphic converter. Which brings us to the new question: How do I create these new mouths and where do I place them?
( I apologize if I – AS NooB – am getting ahead of myself. )

Thanks Again,
Craig

There are or should be folders in the "Mouths" folder in the Papagayo folder;

1-Mouth 1
2-Mouths 2
3 - Gary C Martin

These folders contain the mouth shapes you can open in an image editor. I think to create your own mouth to use in papagayo you just add a folder of mouth shapes to that folder. I did it once and it worked. That's all I know.

HeyVern,
This is not the case on my mac. In fact there's no Mouth FOLDER per se. "Mouth.moho" is a file.
I appreciate any guidance you or anyone else can offer.
Thanks,
Craig

What Mac OS do you use?

There should be a folder SOMEWHERE called "mouths". Maybe it is "inside" the Papagayo application. I still use OS X Panther. Maybe programs are installed differently with Tiger or Leopard. Sometimes there are things "inside" the application "package" (control-click on Papagayo application icon and select "Show Package Contents").

Do a search on the computer for "mouths" of "Kind is Folder".

Duude,
That totally worked. I never did that "show package contents" before. Awesome.
So those are jpgs.
I'm doing cut out work of photos. I guess I'll be using png or psd layers?

Hey Vern,
Thanks,
Craig
