Other Worlds Austin is currently accepting submissions for its Film competition! In only its third year, OWA has already become an important launching pad for Science Fiction filmmaking in the US, with two years of sold out screenings, World and US premieres, and dozens of visiting filmmakers. This year we’re also adding Horror to the mix: Under Worlds Austin, on the same weekend and as part of the Other Worlds Austin, will bring the best in fresh horror to Austin. The film competition is open to Features, Shorts, and Fan Films. The Extended Deadline for the Film Competition is Sept 30th. IMO, paying to compete is BS.

Entry fee is pretty standard Wes, it keeps people from just entering any old thing. :)

Oh, if I had a commercial work I was looking to promote, it would just be an insignificant part of the ad budget. I just think entry fees should be stated up front, so amateurs don't have to dig for it. But for not-for-profit work, I'd never pay to compete.

So a buddy of mine made a short animation , entered into various festivals, got short listed for an academy award and now directs Hollywood films.
There are other people I know who have had similar experiences.
That's what the circuit is for, a way to get your films to people who you think might enjoy it and an investment into the filmmaker's future.

I have enter some of my "stuff" into film fests and I have pity on the screeners. Next week I'm going to the Woodstock Film Fest. I entered a long time ago with a kid friendly animation. I got a reply, 'It made us smile' but was not good enough for the fest. I entered into the wrong film fest. Most of Woodstock is adult animation, not for little kids. So know your venue or audience before wasting your time and money.
