3D Landscape

Post by J. Baker »

Just saw this topic http://www.lostmarble.com/forum/viewtop ... =landscape where Barliesque created this, http://www.lostmarble.com/misc/giles/grass.mov .

Now pre-thinking this, the 3d model would be one layer. So you wouldn't be able to have a character walk around a hill or something, would you? Unless you masked it or something. Any other ideas on this? Looking for the best method to create a 3d landscape.

I have been doing a lot of set design in 3d and the solution to the problem you mention (character walking behind hill) is to split it up into multiple parts. This has worked really well for me, though I haven't used giles and been using 7ft's lighting script.

Think in terms of the multi-layered paralaz backgrounds of old 2D cartoons. Each layer could be a 3D piece, but the character can fit in between them.

Yeah, I had thought about breaking up the scene. Just more work though. Hopefully AS will support true 3D space one day. Although It should stick more to the 2D side. There's already quite a few 3D apps to choose from. I just like the 2.5D effect in AS. Thanks guys!

Blender 2.43 RC1 has been released and now it's easier to bake lighting to textures.
