Multiple smart bone actions

So I'm trying to animate an elephant, and I'm having problems with the trunk. Specifically, with the smart bone actions. I've assigned 3 bones to it, and added separate actions to them, but when I try to animate, the points get distorted because of the multiple actions. I've tried transforming a bone within the action, but when I do that, it gets locked in the mainline, which doesn't work for me.
I guess what I'm trying to say is - is there a way to use multiple actions without the points going where I don't want them to go?
