Ran Into Issues Rigging Images in Moho - Confused

Post by Yosemite Sam »

Hi everyone,

I've always done my work with vectors, but am going to have to move to rigging images for a particular set of animations. This is all new to me, so I'm learning. But I've run into two problems that I could really use some help with.

Just as an FYI, I'm using a combination of Flexi-binding, Smooth Joint, Smart Warp, and Masking. I'm not sure if that's what's causing the issues or not. Mind you, everything functions properly on frame 0.

Here's an image of frame 0:
Image

1st Problem: The top part of the chest body, although bound to the upper body bone, floats away once moved in any direction past frame 0.

2nd Problem: For both arms I'm using a single image. I'm using Smooth Joint on both elbows. I'm also using the trick Victor came up with for duplicating the image and cropping each so Smooth Joint can be used on the wrists as well. Along with that there is some Masking and Smart Warp mesh so I can adjusts the cuffs using a Smart Bone.

However, once I move past frame zero, some of those images shrink down in scale and there's nothing I can do to fix it, other than unlinking the image from the mesh which defeats the purpose.

I know this may seem overly complex when I try and explain it but I'm hoping someone can offer some answers. I've included a link with the Moho file and images if anyone has the chance to look it over.

Thanks!

The chest is moving because that image layer is bound to a bone AND influenced by a smart warp mesh. So the bone is moving it some and the mesh is adding to that, moving it more. Releasing the layer allows only the mesh to control it.

Not sure, but I think smooth joint for bone pairs is a bone influence feature, so that may be why it doesn't play well with the smart warp mesh as well. If I were you, I'd only use smooth joint on the arms and smart mesh for the hands...making sure no mesh warped image layers are bound to any bones.

Thank you so much for the reply. Concerning the chest, I assumed that the mesh layer, and the image linked to it, both needed to be bound to the bone individually, but apparently not as that solved the issue.

And concerning the hand/arm issues, that's what I wound up doing. Too bad we can't use all these things in conjunction, but I suspect that you are right regarding Smooth Joint using bone influence. I mean how else would it be doing such a great job creating those nice bends. Plus, no matter how strong or weak you adjust the bone influence of Smooth Joint bone pairs nothing changes, so there must be an influence going on behind the scenes.

Anyways, again thank you so much, Wes. I truly appreciate you taking the time to look this over.
