Looking for specific tutorial: Two voices, one person, Debut

Post by stealingfeathers »

Hi All.

I teach an online beginner animation class so I have limited contact with my students - other than making video tutorials.

Here is the problem. My students use only AS Debut (most can't afford Pro). The assignment I give for their final project is to Lip Sync two characters having a conversation. Some of my students may not have a friend to record voices with them.

With the 2 layer audio limitation of Debut, this creates a problem because they are required to include an additional sound in their animation (background music, etc.). Of course I know how to pull this off using an audio editor and mixing sounds, etc., but I wondered if there is a tutorial out there can make this really easy for them (I know, I'm probably asking too much).

In a nutshell, how can you make 2 distinct voices with only one person doing the voices and end up with only one audio file for voices to import into AS Debut? Is mixing in an audio editor the only way?

Thanks for reading this!

Do it like they did in the old radio days. Just record everything live--voices, music, foley, etc.--in one take. It’s low tech, but the recording session could be fun and creative.

Yes indeed - that is an option. That does make it harder to use the pitch shift in AS, though. Thanks for the response!

You can do all sound work in Audacity, which is free.
AS 9.5 MacPro Quadcore 3GHz 16GB OS 10.6.8 Quicktime 7.6.6
AS 11 MacPro 12core 3GHz 32GB OS 10.11 Quicktime 10.7.3
Moho 13.5 iMac Quadcore 2,9GHz 16GB OS 10.15

Moho 14.1 Mac Mini Plus OS 13.5

Yes they might need to use Audacity no matter how simple I keep the assignment. I just figured out another great shortcut while I've been investigating the possibilities this morning. I believe I know how to make a really good, yet basic tutorial for them. :-) Thank you for the reply!

If I made a tutorial, it would be something like this:

1. Record audio for first person within Anime Studio while playing the animation.
2. Repeat to record audio for second person
3. Turn off all animation layers, and export video
4. Import this new video and record/add sound effects.

Yeah, that sounds like a good option too. I hadn't thought of that procedure. I made a tutorial for them with different steps than this, but I like yours as an option, too. Thanks a bunch for the suggestion!
